SJAA Field Prep Instructions

Your league commissioner, in collaboration with the SJAA Board, is responsible for establishing the field preparation duties for
both Practices and Games.

F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6: The first team who practices or plays is responsible for getting the field ready to practice.  The last team who practices is responsible for putting the field back into non-practicing state.
  • The First team arriving should unlock both the home and visitor dugout locks.
  • The Last team leaving should re-lock both the home and visitor dugout locks.

FIELD PREPARATION:
  1. Rakes should be used for re-raking the pitching mound and the home plate area. Do not use the drag for these areas.
  2. Rakes should be used for re-raking in front of and around the 1st base and 3rd base areas. Do not use the drag for these areas.
  3. The drag should ONLY be used for the infield clay. When dragging the clay, do not go too fast (to prevent clay mounds and high lips from forming) and try to stay about 1ft to 2ft from the grass.
  4. Always check the drag for gasoline. Do not run dry. If empty and you cannot access gas in the garage, contact your League Commissioner.
  5. Game chalk is located in the main building garage (and in the container for F5 and F6) and should ONLY be applied to clay areas (such as the batter’s box, home plate and 1st/3rd foul lines. DO NOT RUN CHALK IN THE GRASS. For F5 and F6, use chalk ONLY on the clay, not the grass.
  6. When the clay is dry, utilize the screen for dragging; if the clay is clumpy after rain or sprinklers use the tines to scrape the surface (not too deep) to help the clay dry.
  7. The pitching mound tarp should be carefully removed to an out of the way spot along the 3rd or 1st base fence line out of the way of any batter’s warmup area. During cleanup, it should be replaced.
  8. The home plate tarp and sandbags should be carefully removed to an out of the way spot along the 3rd or 1st base fence lines out of the way of any batter’s warmup area. During cleanup, it should be replaced.
  9. For games the tarps should be moved to further down the fence line PAST the dugout areas as to not interrupt the field of play.
  10. For 8U machine pitch, the pitching machines and sandbags should be removed from the garage and then placed back after the LAST 8U practice or game by the 8U teams. DO NOT leave the machine and sandbags on the field for the 10U teams to remove.
